26th September

Cacabelos to vega de valcarce
20 km
5 Deg to 15

Today was the first mountain day for ,it feels like a long time. We left at 8 , it was cold as clear skies. We started climbing more or less straight away through vineyards and unfortunately large pylons that really buzzed. We had breakfast in villa Franca, which is supposed to be one of the most beautiful towns on the Camino.. it was nice but I prefer mountain villages .it retains much of its medieval and Renaissance character but interspersed with modern buildings. It suffered with plague in 1589 and floods in 1715 and was ravaged by British soldiers destroying and stealing from churches.
Leaving this town we had the choice of walking by the road or walking a high , steep trail ,so we chose the later.
All I can say is wow.
The views were amazing and the climb was steep but we had cool weather but sunny .
Eventually,we started the decent through orchards of sweet chestnut. We came to a cafe that served a chestnut cake ( unfortunately,I couldn’t try it but looked yummy).
Arrived at Vega which was a little disappointing as food not good along with the accommodation but ready for the next days climb

    Hi Jenny
You are doing very well and now traveling through some gorgeous spots. I remember the high walk after villa Franca so well. Pete was taking his rain pants off and fell over. I thought he had passed out and had a moment of panic, as to how I would get help being so remote (or so I thought)! Obviously, all was well and the down path through the orchard was lovely.
